ARTIST'S STATEMENT How to visually translate the essence of "chi" the elemental life force that animates all of nature? That is my quest. As artist/poet/actress/playwright, I find myself playing the role of mystical conduit between the worlds of abstraction, using symbols as expression of a connection to a larger picture. My art is thus a tribute to the joy of the human spirit and the multifariousness of this physical plane as a reflection of many worlds, both seen and unseen. - - - - - - - - - - - "...for I live as much with the dead as with the unborn. Somewhat closer to the heart of creation than usual. But not nearly close enough." Epitaph for Paul Klee.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
How to visually translate the essence of “chi”, the elemental life force that animates all of nature? That is my quest.
As artist/poet/actress/playwright, I find myself playing the role of mystical conduit between the worlds of abstraction, using symbols as expression of a connection to a larger picture.
In my paintings I explore the spirituality inherent in life as I seek to visually present the symbolic power of inter-relatedness of the elements. Believing that everything’s alive with its own potential, I create images inspired by my interest in and love of mythology, nature, storytelling and ethnic cultures. Markings, symbols, textures, layers and levels fascinate me metaphysically and aesthetically. Painting allows me to connect with the primitive, the supernatural as merged with the natural. Incorporating natural elements such as sticks, dried reeds, sand and stones in my mixed media paintings, I feel connected with the legacy of ancient storytellers.
The mystical nature of the creative process intrigues me. How do we make choices? How and when does the spirit of the piece of art take on a life of its own? Where does the creative impulse and inspiration come from? What is the role of the creator? Medium or Messenger or both? How does the unknown become manifest? Creating from intuition and improvisation, I play with the themes of Potentiality versus Actualization, Idealized concept versus physical limitations.
I delight in experiencing the spiritual adventure of making art. I embrace the “shamanistic” role of narrator of the soul’s journey. There are many layers to this existence. Much is hidden. Much still yet to surface. My art is thus a tribute to the joy of the human spirit and the multifariousness of this physical plane as a reflection of many worlds, both seen and unseen.
